The standing rig is new. There is no running rigging at this point; that to be fitted as part of the gaff rig modification currently in progress. All in good order as visible.

A partial battened Dacron mainsail and piston hanked Dacron headsail were examined from storage bags belowdeck and found in used but serviceable condition. Both, along with the mast, are being set up as a gaff rig. This is a work in progress, currently incomplete. Requisite sheet and halyard winches are in place or are being fitted.

This motorsailer is built with a single flush deck forward and aft and with well decks in the waist, round-bottom hull single screw vessel with mild sheer, flare, and deck camber, raked stem and canoe stem. The cabin is located on center, with open aft deck, small side decks outboard of the cabin, then an open foredeck.

Bulwarks and two courses of pipe rails to 29" height enclose the fore and aft decks, with bulwarks along the side decks, each with boarding gates. The aft deck has a coaming hatch to the lazarette, and a door from aft into the pilothouse. Steps down each side lead along the cabin, with entry doors, then to steps up to the foredeck, with raised hatch entry to the forecabin, anchor windlass, dinghy, and storage. The mast is stepped through the foredeck and has shroud chainplates outboard at the hull sides, a single forestay to the stemhead fitting, and aft tending upper shrouds as backstays.

Five transverse bulkheads subdivide the vessel into six belowdeck compartments. From forward: forepeak/chain locker, port and starboard quarters with water closets, companionway space, machinery space, aft quarters and water closet, and lazarette.

CONSTRUCTION: Lapped, sealed and riveted 1/4" iron hull, transverse framed, with deck and side frames of 2-1/2"x1/4" flat bar at 16" spacing and with 2-1/2"x2"x1/4" tees at riveted seams. Superstructure is welded aluminum, with the deck as an isolation joint at hull/deckhouse intersections. The deck is of covered teak planks.

Broker's Comments

Though built in 1938 FJORDING has been upgraded with modern systems. She was originally built for the Swedish Coast Guard as a rescue vessel, and reportedly was designed to handle 360-degree rolls. The very capable current owner of 27 years is only the third owner and has been diligent in keeping this boat in top condition. With the three private sleeping cabins, each with their own head, large main saloon, athwart-ships galley, and separate pilot house this vessel is setup for a variety uses. Long distance travel, charter boat, live aboard: all of these are well-suited. The hull is lapped and riveted black iron and the house is insulated aluminum. Metal construction of this traditional type has proven to be robust in usage and very long lived. Many vessels built in this manner and in this time period continue to work the sea today. All of the outside surfaces have been recently painted as well as some of the interior. FJORDING has a full stand up engine room, ideal for maintenance and safe for voyaging. It should also be noted that the current owner of 27 years has had a long successful career as a professional engineer in electronics, mechanical, aircraft restoration, and aircraft and marine design.
